Now departing for Cheyenne, Omaha, and points east

This evening my partner, Ruth, and I are flying from San Francisco to Denver, where we’ll get a shuttle from the airport to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Our bicycles are waiting for us at a bike shop in Cheyenne, where we shipped them ahead to have them reassembled and ready to ride.

Tomorrow morning we pick up our bikes (mine is a 1980s-vintage Maruishi TA-18) and head east into Nebraska, where we’ll rendezvous with the start of the annual Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) on Saturday for a week-long ride across the state that finishes on June 8th at the SAC Museum near Omaha.

BRAN has organized meals and campsites, and a truck to carry everyone’s gear. We’re taking the route of luxury and paying to rent a tent for the week and have someone set it up for us each night.

After that, we’ll be continuing east on our own from Omaha for the next two months.

We might get to Boston by early August, when Ruth needs to come back to San Francisco to start another year of teaching, and I head to Chicago for the biennial Delegate Assembly of the National Writers Union. Or we might not. We’re not committed to a route, destination, or pace.

I’ll be checking voicemail when we have cellphone coverage (relatively poor in some rural areas with T-Mobile), and e-mail probably less often when we stay in motels with working wi-fi.
